How To Brighten Up Your Bedroom

HOW TO BRIGHTEN UP YOUR BEDROOM

A BRIGHT COLOUR PALETTE

To brighten up your bedroom, the first thing would be to change that horrible, dull wall paint and wallpaper! It's always clever to go for white and off-white as it really does brighten up the bedroom and creates the illusion of a larger bedroom space. But you can go with another colour that is lighter-toned and bright.

Of course, you can add some accent colours to make your bedroom colourful (and not that dreary hospital white), for example, add pops of colour to bedding, cushions, blankets, furniture, flowers, houseplants, and wall art.

SUNSHINE - THE NATURAL LIGHT

Let in as much natural light as possible! Open up your drapes, curtains and blinds and you will see how the light fills the room up. This is extremely important- sunlight has the power to really transform a dark, cramped room into something open and much bigger.

ARTIFICIAL LIGHT

The sun won't always be out, especially if your bedroom is positioned away from the rays of sunshine.

But every bedroom should have lots of light: both a main source of light which is centred in the middle of the room on the ceiling ( such as a chandelier, pendant light, dimmers, track lights) and some smaller light fixtures to place in those darker corners of the room where the light doesn't reach, or where you require more lighting. You can add this lighting in the form of lamps - place them on a desk, or on bedside tables, fairy lights, and LED lighting.

ADD A MIRROR FOR ENHANCEMENT

A great tip! Use mirrors in your room if your bedroom is looking a bit dark and dull. This will bounce and reflect the light around your room, multiplying the light and creating depth.

Try placing mirrors behind a bedside table lamp which will maximise the light bouncing around the room- you can even place accent lighting above the mirror to create more light effect, for practical and decorative use.

You can place mirrors adjacent to your window too which also helps maximise the light as well!

SPREAD COLOURFUL ART ON YOUR WALLS

Brighten your bedroom up by placing some picture frames on the wall! Wall hangings are stylish, colourful and add personality to your bedroom so choose wisely. You can go for pictures that are vividly colourful or just simple, lighter-toned, or if you want to create contrast you can go for darker-toned wall hangings with lightly coloured walls.

Whether that be hanging photos, tapestries or painting wall murals… have fun with your bedroom!

LIGHT CURTAINS

When summer approaches, you should always switch up your curtains by going for some lightweight sheer curtains. You can also use unlined curtains - both are great for allowing sunlight to stream inside your room and a cooler breeze to circulate through your room. Pair them nicely with black-out blinds, so you can rest in a darker room during the night and raise the blinds to use sheer curtains during the day.

Changing into these from dark, heavy winter drapes will just help light fill the room which keeps it bright! So choose your curtains!

LIGHT COLOURED FLOORING, CARPET, OR RUGS

Another important interior design tip to brighten up your room is the floor! Try to change the flooring and carpet to something lighter- maybe not white as this can easily show dirt and stains, but maybe light grey, brown or have a light rug on top that has lots of subtle designs and patterns so this won't be a problem. Adding a rug instead of changing the whole flooring/carpet can be much easier!

ADD COLOURFUL FLOWERS AND PLANTS

Complete your room with accent décor in the form of plants and flowers. With a room filled with fresh sunlight and lighter tones of colour, add fresh flowers and plants. These will give your room a nice finish of colour, life and style.
